SPE 220 artifact 2
MCCS standard 2: The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.
CEC standard 7: Beginning special education professionals collaborate with families, other educators, related service providers, individuals with exceptionalities, and personnel from community agencies in culturally responsive ways to address the needs of individuals with exceptionalities across a range of learning experiences.
The artifact I chose for standard 2 and 7 was my classroom management plan. I think it connects with CEC standard 7 because to create a management plan you have to collaborate with others – professionals and parents – to create a concrete plan. Standard 7 says ‘collaborates with families, other educators… in a culturally responsive way to address the needs of individuals.” The needs of individuals can range from a lot of things but in this specific assignment the needs of individuals was procedures incase of emergencies – fire drills, safe in place, or if a student is acting in a dangerous way towards themselves or others. I think it connects to MCCS standard 2 because a classroom management plan also helps create an inclusive environment. Standard 2 says ‘to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.’ If you have your statement of purpose and your classroom rules ready and understood right in the beginning of the school year, and you keep enforcing them using positive and negative reinforcements, your students will do their best and push others to do their best creating an inclusive and safe classroom.
This assignment was important and beneficial for me as a future teacher because it shows me how important and in-depth classroom management plans have to be. It’s important to start with them right off the bat and practice them throughout the school year. These are really important plans for teachers and students to know. It will help me as a teacher because I will be able to create rules and find positive and negative reinforcements that encourage students to want to do their best and try their hardest during learning. Practicing procedures like walking to and from other classrooms is also important because if you are loud in the hallway that not only affects your class but it disrupts all the other classes you pass by when they are trying to learn. These procedures and rules also help develop respect in the classroom between peers and the teacher. If you practice these plans with your students and they don’t work how you wanted, you can alter them based on areas you need to, but you have to communicated them to the students and keep practicing them. It is also important to communicate these plans to your parents so that they also know the plan for keeping their child safe in case of an emergency. This also helps to build good parent-teacher relationships.
