Linked above is my reading/language timeline. It is a short video of me explaining a timeline I made of a baby-toddler learning to read and write.

The reason I attached this artifact to standard 1 was because this video demonstrates how babies learn and grow into readers and writers. Standard 1 says, “understands how learners grow and develop.” As teachers we need to have an understanding of how students and kids progress in all subjects. If we don’t understand how they progress, or what type of learner they are, how will we know what techniques to use to teach them? The timeline I made is a short overview of how kids progress into readers and writers, obviously there is much more information into how a child learns to read and write but it is just one example of how a child normally/naturally progresses. If a student somewhere along this timeline struggles, for example they don’t start writing around the age they are supposed, or they really struggle with understanding letters and where they face, look, their sound, etc.. Then we as teachers know maybe they struggle with dyslexia and we should do further testing, or maybe they just learn slowly and need more one on one time. Knowing these things help us create a learning plan for these students and find the right techniques that help them learn, because we want every student to succeed.
