Homework for November 15
1- In my paper I affirm by saying that enriched majors are good and going into more depth about how education is an enriched major. I challenge/add by saying that edu is found in all four metagenres and asking if it should have its own metagenre or if Carter forgot one.
2- They think I have enough of an introduction. I need more explanations and more of my idea.
3- I use good evidence. I just need to work on my paper more so obviously I will need to add more.
Original paragraph :
Michael Carters article talks about genres. He describes genres as parts that make up majors. Carter then talks about what is a “metagenre” and he describes a metagenre as being “made up of different genres.” He says that there are four metagenres. They are problem solving, empirical inquiry, call for research from sources, and the call for performance. Specifically focusing on the education major, it fits into each metagenre. The first one, problem solving can be seen easily as it is pretty much an essential skill needed to be a teacher. Many things can happen, especially if you are a teacher, causing you to have to change your plan or alter a lesson plan for students. The second metagenre, empirical inquiry, is seen in the data on different learning styles. Future have to take classes to learn and experience different learning types and you have to find ways to teach that can incorporate more than one type of learning. The call for research from sources I think is found in learning about students with special needs or particular learning types. Teachers have to learn about all learning disabilities so that if a student is in their class with one of the disabilities, they can do what is necessary to accommodate for that child. Call for performance is found in what lessons you absorb as a future teacher; what are somethings you learn in the classroom that stick with you when you move on to become a teacher that you remember? It is also seen in what lessons you teach your students.
Revised paragraph :
The education major at the University of New England is an enriched major because it can answer all three of Boyer’s questions. The three questions,“What is the history and tradition of the field to be examined? What are the social and economic implications to be understood? What are the ethical and moral issues to be confronted?” are the threshold that make or break a major. The first question is asking about the origins of the major and how it came to be one. The second question is asking how does it help you communicate with others, and why is it important for society. The last one is asking if it matters, what is moral, is it okay to lie in situations, when is it okay to lie, what is not okay to lie about, etc.. The education major can answer all of these questions, this means it is an enriched major. Education majors graduate to become teachers and they influence so many children who will end up becoming the ‘new’ history of the major. The history of the education major is taught throughout many different classes like the foundations of literary development and instruction, which and literacy research based instructional methods. The ethical and moral issues are answered and taught in different classes also like the diversity in schools.
