Standard 6: The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.
For this standard I chose my literacy assessment portfolio. For this assignment we had to conduct a running record and do a words this way test with a student. It was really beneficial to do one of these because we will have to do these when we are teachers and in classrooms so it was good to know what to do. I think this connects to standard 6 because it is a form of assessment and we have to know many different types of those. We also have to learn to monitor our students progress and a running record is a great way of monitoring progress. Standard 6 also says “guide the teacher’s decision making” and the results from these assessments are very helpful when we have to plan for future lessons for our students and find areas they need extra support in.
This will help me when I am a teacher because we will have to do running records with all of our students and it is good to know how to do it and practice with students while they don’t affect a students learning or our grades. It takes the pressure off of it and allowed me to figure out how I would take notes to keep track how the student reads and pauses or not, self corrects, etc.. It will help me learn how to change and differentiate lessons for my students based on their levels and what areas they need more help with. These running records are really important for teachers lessons and students learning because as teachers we don’t really get a lot of one on one time with all of our students and find areas they need extra help with, running records let us really see in depth areas students need help with and make time for one on one instruction with a student.
